本文对现代火炮作了明确定义

又叙述了中国古代火炮的各种含义与沿革:管形火器是现代火炮的鼻祖

而在火药用于军事之后、管形火器发明以前这段时期中

古籍中所称的火炮有时是指被抛掷的燃烧物或爆炸物

有时是指抛射这种燃烧或爆炸物的抛掷器械。文中对《中国通史简编》里有关"旋风炮"的叙述提出了不同看法。本文从古代火炮的演变过程

在火炮能源方面展望了火炮的未来。
